Data Recycling®, “TechSprint 2023 Winner”
TechSprint, organised by the Caisse des Dépôts et Consignations (CDC), is an event devoted to technological innovation for accelerating France's ecological transformation through data. It is an open, market-wide challenge available to every player in the ecosystem, allowing all to take part in an open framework that fosters collective momentum and the building of efficient solutions by every stakeholder.
The main goal is to build innovative, technological solutions to meet the challenges of digital transformation, finance, responsible investment, financial inclusion, real estate and other fields.
This first edition, which began on 30 March, saw 33 projects assessed by independent experts. Data Recycling® from Systnaps was among the solutions identified in the “BAMBOO” category, which gathered solutions already in service and ready to be deployed at scale. The winners were unveiled on 4 July 2023, when Data Recycling® was crowned.
What is Data Recycling® by Systnaps?
Data Recycling® is an innovative eco-governance platform for the efficient management of the data lifecycle. Built on unique technology born of 16 years of R&D, it allows organisations to optimise their digital footprint by bringing data into the circular economy. It focuses on the reduction, recycling, reuse and environmentally respectful destruction of data. Recognised by the “Efficient Solution” label of the global Solar Impulse Foundation, its holistic approach aims to reduce the carbon footprint, minimise energy consumption, optimise storage usage and promote a more responsible use and sharing of IT resources. This pioneering solution delivers significant results, with reductions of up to 50% at implementation and 20% within a continuous improvement process, ensuring a fast ROI with less effort.
Contribution to the ecosystem
The Data Recycling® project brings an innovative, sustainable model for data management within the digital ecosystem. It offers a framework for the transition to a circular digital economy while providing solutions to improve transparency and regulatory compliance. By promoting the reduction, recycling and reuse of data, it also encourages a more responsible use of digital resources. The Data Recycling® platform will facilitate collaboration between producers, consumers, regulators, recyclers, data owners and hosting providers, offering optimised solutions for storing, managing and exploiting data while respecting the principles of sustainability and data protection.
Impact objective over five years
Within five years, the goal is to contribute significantly to the ecological transition by cutting data centre energy consumption by up to 30% and reaching a data recycling rate of 40%. That objective will be achieved through optimised data lifecycle management and intelligent adjustment of server availability levels, allowing them to be powered down when demand permits. Measurement indicators will include tracking the total and recycled volume of data, energy consumption per unit of data stored and processed, and the number of decisions taken and actions carried out thanks to data reuse.
TechSprint objective for end-2023
The TechSprint “Bamboo” programme will allow us to complete the onboarding of our partners, develop the MVP of the Data Recycling® platform and launch our pilot by the end of 2023. We then plan to trial the solution on representative pilot sites by industry and to industrialise the data management processes of the recycling centres. This will also allow us to design and finalise the regulatory, energy and environmental compliance cockpits.
Through the TechSprint initiative, the CDC Group demonstrates a resolute commitment to sustainability and to reducing the environmental footprint of all its subsidiaries. That commitment is perfectly aligned with its public interest and sustainable development missions. The Data Recycling® approach, centred on efficiency and the optimisation of data management, fits naturally into this strategy and harmonises with the European data strategy (the Data Act) and the carbon neutrality objective for 2050 (the Green Deal). Going beyond data recycling alone, the CDC Group — with CDC Habitat, Docaposte and Systnaps — is initiating work on establishing, both organisationally and technically, an auditable ecosystem-wide extra-financial accounting consistent with accounting transactions.
